As Microsoft engineer Stacey Spears' test disc revealed, the HD-A20's video processor does not pick up 3:2 pulldown when outputting 1080p. This indicates that the player is interlacing the 1080p/24 on the disc in the process of sending 1080p/60 from the HDMI output. The Olevia 747i LCD panel worked for a short time after I updated the player's firmware, and it's HQV Realta video processor did a much better job deinterlacing 1080i from the player.
The HQV Benchmark HD DVD exhibited some flickering in the video and film resolution loss tests, and jaggies were moderate—not a good sign. For some unknown reason, the HQV Benchmark DVD was displayed in a 4:3 window, even though the player and all displays I tried it on were set to 16:9. Despite this problem, I could see that the player picked up 3:2 pulldown from DVD, even though it didn't from HD DVD.
