Starting with the HQV Benchmark Blu-ray disc and the player set to 1080p/60, the video-resolution and film-resolution loss tests both exhibited some flickering in the two highest-frequency boxes. Jaggies were slightly visible. Unfortunately, the BDP-S300 could not play the test disc from Microsoft engineer Stacey Spears on BD-RE.
Switching to the HQV Benchmark DVD, the Sony displayed it in a 4:3 window, just like the Toshiba HD-A20. Unlike the Toshiba, however, the BDP-S300 has a control that corrected the geometry. There was slight flickering in the highest-frequency detail pattern, and the highest-frequency chroma pattern was severely rolled off. As the player looped this screen, it freaked out for a few seconds, but it only happened once. Jaggies were moderate at 1080p/60, and the player’s processor never picked up 3:2 pulldown.
