This system is said to be the first high-end turntable. Yet it (apparently) sounded no better than other commercial decks of its time. Source components were thought to be "passive" until the Linn in the 1970s.

If the AR itself was "passive", how could it have been a high-end audio product ? Aren't these components based on sound ?

It's well known that by the 60s, an audiophile would (likely) have a ESL speaker system. Planars came out in the 70s.

Question - what did the original hi-fier's use in the 50's ? I say the big Bozaks, the Klipschorn, the Hartsfield or an AR-1 (all used in mono, of course).

I recently inherited a Crown Series Pro-800 Recorder/Reproducer and boxes and boxes of classical and opera recordings.  My step-father was a very meticulous fellow (an eye surgeon) and kept the unit in excellent condition.  Even the file folder manual is in perfect condition.  I found letters included that show correspondence with the Crown company, wherein my step father asks for advice, etc.

I recently purchased a pair of Energy 22 Ref Conns off the 'gon and have located someone to rebuild the tweeters and another to re-do the xovers and am wondering what other folks have done with this marvelous speaker.

After reading the article in TAS about the 10 speakers that changed hi end as we know it, writen by Harry Pearson.( this was a well writen article in my opinion)  I was thinking with the amount of  small towns who host various museums and halls of fame is there enough interest to suport a audio museum.

As the topic suggests...anyone know of any?

I've heard there are a couple out there, but Google doesn't take me directly to any that are more audiophile oriented. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Get a nice new LARGE dixie-cup.

Next, get some special teflon coated string.

Hook it up to your Phone and you're all done.

Perfect!!!

Is there a n organized group of enthusiasts of the products of Audioson Kirksaeter of Dusseldorf, Germany? His small factory produced loudspeakers, and receivers of stunning quality, fit, and finish, but have foerver been quite obscure. I would appreciate any input others might have on the topic....

I know it's not an electronics topic...but my thinking is that the Klipschorn was the first separate-box loudspeaker (for home audio) in 1946-47. Is this correct ? Before this, speakers were built-in to consoles.

The AR-1 would later be the first *direct radiator* (for home use) in the mid-50's. Before the AR-1, separate DR's were huge.....
