Shure’s flagship SRH1840 marks a strong entry into the world of upper-tier open-back headphones. We particularly like the SRH1840’s terrific openness, purity of timbres (especially midrange and treble timbres), top-to-bottom articulacy, and expressive dynamics. While we might wish for more powerful mid and low bass response, plus a more flexible and easier to fit frame design, this is a beautifully made headphone that offers solid value for money.
If the SRH1840 is too rich for your blood, note that Shure’s SRH1440 offers a similar (though not quite so finely resolved) sound, more robust bass, and a better fitting frame—all for several hundred dollars less. In short, the SRH1440 may well be the overachiever of the family.
