Upgraded from a Duet to the Touch over the summer in order to get native playback of my hi-res files.
Very pleased. The Touch is an inexpensive way to enter the high/end and hi-res world of digital audio. I think to seriously outperform it you need to get to the $1500 range of DACs, and then add on a front end like a Laptop. So the Touch is a true bargain, especially if you already have a PC or NAS functioning as a music server.
I use the Touch within "touching distance" of my listening position and find its UI convenient. However, I agree that the screen is too small for use as a control device from more than about 7 feet away. In a setup like that the user would need a Duet Controller, iPod Touch/iPhone, iPad, or Laptop to efficiently work with the Touch.

I don't think you can expect FLAC to play on a MAC at all, unless you make specific software additions designed to enable MACs to playback Flac.
