We may have to call this one a do-over: Samsung dropped the ball on the launch of the first Blu-ray player. Samsung engineers determined that the noise-reduction circuit in the player's Genesis scaler chip was enabled, causing the picture to soften significantly. Other Blu-ray claims to fame were missing, too, like an Ethernet port for advance interactivity and no advanced audio decoding other than PCM. Overall, Blu-ray has the potential to look every bit as good as HD DVD, perhaps even a little better for a number of technical reasons. We'll wait to see how the next Blu-ray player performs.
