Toshiba HD-XA1

Toshiba HD-XA1

The first out of the gates in this year's high-definition player race, the Toshiba HD-DVD player is essentially a computer - though a seemingly slow one. It takes a very long time to do just about anything with an HD-DVD disc. But when you get it going, picture quality is fantastic. Audio was low - I had to raise the volume on my receiver by nearly 20 dB. But overall, Toshiba's player is a big success.
