At $1199, Sharp's SD-HX500 is well priced, but certainly not inexpensive. I believe its natural competition will come in the form of packages comprising conventional AVRs (likely in the $500 range), standalone universal players (also in the $500 range) and the obligatory $200-worth of cables needed to connect them. Which way should you go? The answer depends entirely on your priorities. In terms of power and flexibility, the conventional AVR/player/cable combos are the hands-down winners; but in terms of ease of setup, overall convenience, and ease of use (not to mention sleek good looks), the Sharp is the clear victor.
