Rather than the more conventional resistor in front of the high-frequency driver, Tannoy uses a version of its auto-transformer technology to, as the literature says, improve "damping and control of the tweeter by the amplifier," resulting in cleaner performance. The small dual mid-bass drivers allow for the columnar style. The increased cabinet depth provides sufficient interior volume for lower frequency output.
