The toughest part of this review was trying to decide which of the 808's qualities impressed me the most. Its spaciousness and three-dimensionality and its eerily realistic soundspace can fool you into thinking you're a fly on the wall in the recording studio. No less impressive is the speed and supremely powerful yet superbly effortless dynamics of the 808. The only downside is that, while it makes the absolute most of a good recording, it also makes a bad recording all to clear. |

This outstanding player has been significantly upgraded in the new 808.2. The 808.2 employs a new custom digital filter that reportedly reduces distortions we've come to accept as "CD sound" and makes CDs sound more like high-resolution sources. An audition at the 2008 CES suggested that the new player is a contender for the state-of-the-art. Sue Kraft is working on review of the 808.2.
