CE Majors Collaborate to Discuss the Future of A/V Connectivity http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/08/06/ce-majors-collaborate-to-discuss-the-future-of-av-connectivity/ http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/08/06/ce-majors-collaborate-to-discuss-the-future-of-av-connectivity/#comments Wed, 06 Aug 2008 16:29:37 +0000 Seth Richards http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/08/06/ce-majors-collaborate-to-discuss-the-future-of-av-connectivity/ According to a press release, Sony, Samsung, Hitachi, Motorola, Sharp, and Israeli company Amimon have united to form a special interest group to develop an industry standard for multi-room audio and video connectivity based around Amimon’s Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) technology.

The release claims that the objective of the group is to develop an interoperable standard that will ensure products manufactured by different companies will be able to directly connect to one another in order to provide wireless streaming of uncompressed HD A/V signals across devices - such as HDTVs and game consoles - throughout the home.

The Associated Press reports that while there are other wireless technologies in various stages of development such as WirelessHD and ultra-wideband (UWB), WHDI - though less exotic than WirelessHD, which uses an open portion of the radio band at 60 gigahertz compared to WHDI’s at 5 gigahertz - is able to transmit over greater distances than its competitors.

According to the AP report, Amimon utilizes an innovative technology that prioritizes components of a video signal, using most of its channel resources to transmit the “crucial information” and using less for the less crucial information (such as miniscule gradations of color in a small area).

Even though this technology does not use compression, it hardly seems a solution for HD streaming given that image quality decreases as distance increases according to the AP report. The report adds that some companies in the consortium, such as Samsung, believe WHDI will only be used until WirelessHD technology comes into its own.

The press release notes that the special interest group aims to complete its objective sometime in 2008.

TiVo and Amazon Bring Instant Purchasing http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/08/06/tivo-and-amazon-bring-instant-purchasing/ http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/08/06/tivo-and-amazon-bring-instant-purchasing/#comments Wed, 06 Aug 2008 16:28:45 +0000 Seth Richards http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/08/06/tivo-and-amazon-bring-instant-purchasing/ The New York Times reports that TiVo and Amazon have teamed up to create a “product purchase” feature on TiVo remote controls that will allow users to purchase products featured on television programs—and eventually commercials—with the touch of a button.

The report continues by saying that links to buy products - such as a book or CD featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show or on The Late Show with David Letterman - will appear in a Tivo onscreen menu. The user can purchase the product right away or save the item in an Amazon account so as not to interrupt the program being viewed.

In the coming months, notes the report, TiVo plans on making this option available to advertisers so that users can buy products directly from television commercials.

Thomas S. Rogers, chief executive of TiVo says in the Times report; “Our goal now is to work with the media industry to come up with ways to resist the downward pressure of less advertising viewing and create a way for advertising on TV to become more effective, more engaging and closer to the sale. What we are trying to do is to create all the underpinnings of a future business model for television.”

Jazz: The Defining Moments http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/21/jazz-the-defining-moments/ http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/21/jazz-the-defining-moments/#comments Mon, 21 Jul 2008 19:02:23 +0000 admin http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/21/jazz-the-defining-moments/ by Jonathan Horwich

Introduction:

Any jazz fan, whether a deeply committed fanatic or casual listener, will agree that jazz is a truly indigenous American art form, growing, like the country itself, from a rich racial and cultural polyglot. And like a continent-wide jam session, the genre has echoed down the decades, its rhythms and styles intertwining, joining, dividing, growing.

Within that macrocosm there are pivotal moments of brilliance, moments that send the subject spinning off into a new and exciting direction. We all have our favorites: studio sessions or live sets that stand out in terms of innovation or outstanding execution.

Words often fall short when trying to describe such moments. Words contain, limit, define. Jazz, and particularly jazz improvisation, is about transcending limits and barriers. That said, words can be valuable in calling attention to these stellar moments, so others can find them and experience them directly. That is my intention with this column.

A case in point:

Rhapsody Embraces the Downloadable World http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/09/rhapsody-embraces-the-downloadable-world/ http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/09/rhapsody-embraces-the-downloadable-world/#comments Wed, 09 Jul 2008 15:41:48 +0000 Seth Richards http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/09/rhapsody-embraces-the-downloadable-world/ According to a Reuters report, in a move similar to the one made by Napster earlier this year, digital music site Rhapsody has opened a download store providing MP3 tracks compatible with the iPod in order to challenge Apple’s monopolistic music empire, iTunes.

“We’re no longer competing with the iPod, said Rhapsody’s Vice President Neil Smith. “We’re embracing it.

Given the vast popularity of Apple’s portable music player, a digital music store has no choice but to provide tracks compatible with the iPod if it wants a chance to compete with Apple’s iTunes.

The report adds that until now, Rhapsody has been largely a subscription-based service delivering unlimited streaming to its customers for $13 to $15 a month.

The report continues by saying that Rhapsody will also provide the music store portion of MTV’s music Web site as well as content for the popular Facebook application, iLike.

Additionally, the report notes, Rhapsody services will be available for Verizon cell phone users via the wireless VCAST service. Songs purchased from phones can then be transferred to computers.

A quick perusal of rhapsody.com indicates that most full albums retail for $10 and single tracks for $1.

Onkyo Announces Blu-ray Player Release http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/01/onkyo-announces-blu-ray-player-release/ http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/01/onkyo-announces-blu-ray-player-release/#comments Tue, 01 Jul 2008 18:04:59 +0000 Charlie Robb http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/07/01/onkyo-announces-blu-ray-player-release/ July 1 - The very highly anticipated Blu-ray player from Onkyo now has a general release date. In an announcement from Onkyo, they detail a release date sometime in “late 2008″.

There are only very scant details about the product itself, except that it will support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound formats with 1080p video playback.

Onkyo had previously thrown their lot in with the now defunct HD DVD camp, making some very quality HD DVD players. These high-performance HD DVD players have served to generate quite a stir about the potential quality of an Onkyo Blu-ray player, making this one of the more highly anticipated products of 2008 among home theater enthusiasts.

There is no confirmed price or further specs available at the moment.
