According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Tribeca Film Institute is partnering with Amazon to launch Reframe, an Online service that allows users or rights holders to digitize rare films and videos and rent or sell them on a nonexclusive basis.
The report continues to say that the service creates a free digital copy of video and an “at-costâ€? copy of film for content owners. The site will then offer purchasable and rental copies through Amazon’s DVD on Demand service (for physical copies) and Unbox (for downloads). Â
The report goes on to say that the Tribeca Film Institute, which is a nonprofit organization, will take 50 percent of the profits from each digital rental and sale. Profit distribution for physical sales, however, operates on a tiered system where the rights holder receives a higher percentage of profit for higher priced titles. The more expensive titles, which can reach $200 to purchase, are aimed at the educational market but can also be rented by anyone for about four dollars and will be viewable for between 36 hours and 30 days.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the site currently has about 500 titles but will have approximately 1,500 in the next few months and 10,000 by the end of the year.
