Blu-ray to Reach 30 Million Homes in 2008
May 12th, 2008 — By Charlie RobbMay 12 – Now that the pesky “format warâ€? business has been taken care of, many analysts seem to think that the future of Blu-ray in the US is looking very prosperous.
According to research published by Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices, Blu-ray will jump into around 29.4 million homes this year alone.
By the year 2012, Blu-ray will have increased its market penetration to 132 million homes worldwide.
They go on to predict that the Sony’s PS3 will drive Blu-ray sales until 2009, when standalone players will have become the dominant players in people’s homes.
This is of course no surprise to anyone. Blu-ray is the most logical successor to DVD, since HD DVD’s collapse.
With a booming HDTV market that is gaining more and more mass market penetration each day, many consumers will become unsatisfied with standard DVDs paired with their new HDTV, necessitating a change to an HD format.
Now we can sit on our laurels until downloadable HD content becomes a major player and we have yet another “format war.
