Bob Carver’s BMW Experience
March 27th, 2008 — By Charlie RobbMarch 27 - In an upcoming interview conducted by Robert Harley, Bob Carver tells an incredibly humorous anecdote about his time designing a subwoofer for BMW’s Z3.
He says, “I got a call from BMW, the automobile company in Munich. They wanted a subwoofer for their Z3, so I went over there as a consultant. When I walked into their lab I knew I was in the right place.”
“Edgar Kirk, who is the chief acoustician there, had a brand new, beautiful BMW four-door sedan in a big empty room with white floors. The car’s two front doors were removed and in their place was a pair of Apogee Scintilla loudspeakers. They were sitting on the floor, of course, but the Scintillas replaced the doors and were connected by thick cables.
I knew I was in the right place, and he said, “Bob, we’ve gotta make this system sound like this. This is what we have to achieve, but in a more practical way.”
The image of the BMW with doors that had been replaced by loudspeakers and the subsequent conversation is undoubtedly one of the more humorous industry anecdotes I’ve ever heard.
This interview was conducted by The Absolute Sound and should be available in full in a later issue

Visibility through the Scintillas must have been terrible!
