Sony to Spend $200 Million on new OLED Technology
March 6th, 2008 — By Charlie Robb
March 6 – Now that Sony has emerged victorious in the HD disc format war, it appears as if they will be turning their attention to the next great HDTV technology, OLED.
Sony announced today that they will spend slightly over $200 million developing OLED, Organic Light-Emitting Diode, technology for larger display sizes.
Presumably that $200 million will also make these sets slightly more attainable for the mass market consumers.
Sony currently has for sale their very publicized OLED HDTV, the XEL-1, but it is only 11-inches and costs around $2,500, making it a rather unreasonable purchase for most people.
OLED technology itself has great promise, with the potential for incredible contrast ratios up to 1,000,000:1 and absolutely minuscule display depths.
We can hope that this big infusion of cash can push OLED HDTVs into the mainstream without having to spend $15,000 for an adequate sized HDTV.
