TPV INSIDER: In-depth On Movie Download Sites
September 25th, 2007 — By Charlie RobbCinemaNow is trying to push the envelope by experimenting with a Burn-to-DVD option, which currently includes about 100 titles at $9–$20 a pop. Unfortu¬nately, the selection is uninspiring, prices are roughly the same as store-bought DVDs, burning to DVD requires a separate program download, and the process is not exactly smooth sailing. cinemanow.com
Wal-Mart recently entered the market too, making news as the first service with support from all the major Hollywood studios (though, again, specific title availability is hit or miss). The mega-retailer is offering titles for purchase only, and in true Wal-Mart fashion the company beats the price offered by competitive services on some movies, though you have to comparison shop to unearth the bargains. For example, when Stranger Than Fiction was released for download, Wal-Mart charged $14.88 compared to Movielink’s $19.99, though the savings for Borat was just 11 cents.
