[CES 07] Best Thiel Yet Intro’d This Year
January 12th, 2007 — By Jim HannonInnovative technologies bring Thiel speakers up a notch

There’s good news for Thiel fans. The long-awaited Thiel 3.7 ($9,900) was sounding very good, driven by Ayre electronics and an SME 20-12 front-end, in the Cardas room.
It will be available for shipment in “the next few months.” With it’s rounded, domed cabinet, all new drivers, and its richer tonal balance, the 3.7 is the best sounding Thiel I have heard.
All the drivers have very high bandwidth yet are run way within their frequency ranges for reduced break-up and improved coherence. The ribs in the woofers decrease resonance and make the drivers more “piston-like.” The tweeter and midrange units are integrated yet each has a separate motor. All these innovations yield a speaker with extended but natural-sounding highs, great focus and soundstaging, very fast transient speed, and the ability to produce a lot of detail without sounding edgy.
