January 8th, 2007 — By Barry WillisToshiba Delivers Next-Generation HD DVD Players

Toshiba has made good on its promise to deliver next-generation HD DVD players. Entry-level model HD-A2, and upscale model HD-XA2 are shipping to dealers in larger volumes than predecessor HD-A1, according to Toshiba America v.p. of marketing Jodi Sally. Mid-priced player HD-A20 should arrive this spring. Toshiba’s players all feature HDMI connections.
Toshiba’s HD DVD players output HD DVD content through the HDMI interface in 720p or 1080i for the HD-A2, and 720p, 1080i or 1080p for the HD-A20 and the HD-XA2. The three models are all backward compatible, so users can continue to enjoy their libraries of current DVD and CD software. With the market penetration of HDTVs up more than 50 percent in the first nine months of last year, Toshiba expects demand for HD DVD players to surge.
