[CES 07] Definitive’s Lovely New Floorstanders
January 8th, 2007 — By Chris MartensGreat Looking, New Technology

Many enthusiasts credit Definitive’s Mythos speaker family with establishing the now popular “plasma speaker” category, and at CES the firm expanded the family with its most abitious model ever: the Mythos ST floorstanding speaker. Like all Mythos model, the new ST is housed in a slim, polished aluminum enclosure (offered in silver or black, as shown here). But on the inside, the ST’s technology is all new.
The top section of the ST features a D’Appolito array with two 5.25-inch patented Definititive BDSS mid-bass drivers flanking an all-new, centrally positioned 1-inch aluminim dome tweeter. The BDSS drivers share the same technology used in Definitive’s terrific-sounding, TPV award-winning ProCinema 1000 system, while the tweeter is said to reduce non-linearities by a whopping 50 percent relative to earlier Definitive tweeters.
The bottom section of the ST features a distinctive racetrack-shaped, carbon fiber-coned woofer powered by a 300-watt digital amplifier, plus two “infrasonic” subwoofers. Bass output for each sleek ST is comparable to output from one of Definitive’s award-winning SuperCube I subwoofers, which is saying a mouthful.
We can’t wait to try these speakers in TPV’s Audio Lab, because our expectation is that they will combine decorator-approved, plasma-friendly good looks with eye-popping high-end sound. In fact, the Mythos STs just might turn out to be the most audiophile-pleasing products Definitive has yet made.

re:these speakers: you are a “maggie” fan - i have old 1.5’s to replace this spring - would the mythos’ be better than 3.6 maggies? esp for home theater, as opposed to “audiophile, one listening spot” for music only type speakers.
Comment by walt January 8th, 2007 @ 5:03 pmI recognize the variables inherent in my question( upstream equipment;room size. etc. ) at this point, only the speakers are weak, as anthem d-2 and p-5 are upstream etc.)
your insight is most appreciated, as are those on ‘your’ websight.
thx

i have the mythos 1 towers and absolutely love them. i can’t wait to read the reviews on these new mythos ST’s so get them in the lab. there are better speakers out there, but i believe no one, and i mean no one, can touch deftech when it comes to the best speakers for the $$. they are in a class by themselves as i’m sure these new mythos will prove.
Comment by dan May 3rd, 2007 @ 3:28 pmI have heard the mythos, but they can’t come close to the Von Schweikert Vr4-JR MkII, which sell for $3990/pair, which is about the price of the mythos.
Comment by arun August 21st, 2007 @ 3:19 pmThe VRs have a much wider and deeper soundstage, great delineation between instruments, excellent bass reaching down to 25Hz and great timbre as well. You have to check them out. Even the Wilson Sophias that sell for $11000/pr do not perform as well as t he VR overall.
The Von Schweikert Vr4-JR MkII are $5695 a pair not $3990, which makes the about $2095 (60%) more expensive than the Mythos ST. The Mythos are an excellent value.
