[CEDIA 06] World’s First 42″ 1080p Plasma
September 16th, 2006 — By Scott WilkinsonHitachi just upped the ante in the 42″ plasma game, demonstrating the world’s first 1920×1080 panel at that size. It uses ALiS (Alternate Lighting of Surfaces) technology, in which adjacent horizontal rows of pixels share the same electrode and are activated alternately. Also at the booth is a 60″ 1080p plasma, in which adjacent rows of pixels share the same addressing electrode, but all pixels are activated simultaneously with separate electrodes behind them. Both panels can accept 1080p/24 and 1080p/60, though 1080p/24 is displayed at 60Hz (two frames, three frames, two frames, etc.). These are technology demonstrations at this point; look for commercial products by mid-2007. Even so, they looked stunning.
