[CEDIA 06] Niles Audio Expands ICS, Cat-5 Options
September 16th, 2006 — By Barry Willis
For decades a major player in the custom installation market, Miami-based Niles Audio Corporation is expanding its “IntelliControl ICS whole-house audio system. New at CEDIA are two new source card modules—the IM-NET module for integrating IP-based sources, and the TM-HD/R module for incorporating HD Radio. New technologies and delivery formats are increasingly available to ICS owners thanks to the expandable card cage design of the GXR2 Modular MultiZone Receiver.
Also new is the RS232G Bi-directional Gateway for integrating IntelliControl ICS with subsystems such as Lutron lighting controls, and Escient and ReQuest music servers. Connected to the ICS via CAT 5 cable, the RS232G Bi-directional Gateway sits nearby or up to 100 meters away from the GXR2. Subsystems connected thusly can be controlled like any IntelliControl ICS source, with each product’s metadata and source information sent to the IntelliControl ICS keypads, touchscreens and two-way wireless iRemote controllers. The system’s wizard-based “PC IntelliFile 3 configuration software allows the installation of the entire suite of ICS products in up to 30 rooms or zones in less than 10 minutes, upgraded to accommodate new sources.
Niles also has rolled out a new series of CAT-5 Baluns (balanced-unbalanced adapters). The nine new products enable extended cable runs over longer distances in structures already wired with CAT-5 cable. Normally used in pairs, each CAT-5 Balun model is designed for a specific application: analog audio, digital audio composite video, S-video, cable TV, component video and digital audio, S-video and analog audio, and VGA signal distribution.
Extremely useful for distribution of high-rez audio and video, the CAT-5 component video and digital audio balun features a shielded CAT-5 connector; gold-plated, color-coded RCA connectors; and universal mounting holes. Video bandwidth is 0-60 MHz (-3 dB) and digital audio bandwidth is 25 MHz –(-1dB). Transmission distance is 500-1000 feet. MSRP is $99.95.
