[CEDIA 06] From Military to Home Theater: Leveler Aims to Protect
September 15th, 2006 — By Barry Willis
With a strong background in industrial and military applications, CEDIA newcomer Leveler Protective Technology has unveiled the “IPURE, a beautifully designed surge protector/powerline conditioner claimed to draw no current from the wall while idling. The IPURE combines “total energy suppression (TES) technology with patented bi-directional surge protection operating in both the voltage and current domains.
Available in several designer colors, the IPURE uses what company engineers call “magnetic normalization to maintain noise-free power. All line-borne noise is converted to useful energy inside the device.
Made completely in the USA, the IPURE has two isolated banks of cryogenically-treated outlets—one bank for video and one for audio, to minimize component crosstalk. The 10A banks also could presumably be used to separate analog and digital components, to reduce contamination caused by noise from digital power supplies, an approach favored by other manufacturers. That’s not really necessary, thanks to the IPURE’s wideband noise suppression (100Hz-2GHz).
Leveler products emit no RFI /EMI and therefore need no shielding, engineers say. Components connected to the IPURE benefit from power factor correction, harmonic distortion removal, and “energy consumption reduction, according to information at a press event here at CEDIA Expo.
Homeowners will also benefit from the IPURE’s exceptional durability and resistance to lightning strikes. Before leaving the factory, each unit is subjected to 1280 surges within a 24 hour period. That’s mighty rigorous testing, but not nearly as rigorous as that provided by Mother Nature. Company execs proudly point to an installation at the US Marine Corps post at Camp Lejeune, NC, where a lightning strike during a tropical storm took out everything except gear connected to Leveler protective devices.
MSPR for the IPURE is $3349 without uninterruptible power supply (UPS) capability, and $4029 with UPS. The company also offers the 10A/8 outlet Bantam 10.8 at $1200, and the 4A/4 outlet Bantam 4.4 at $595.
