[CEDIA 06] Sunfire Cinema Ribbon Mini (CRM)
September 13th, 2006 — By Chris Martens
Sunfire Corporation was founded and is today led by the famous and versatile A/V designer Bob Carver, who has been active in the A/V industry since the 1970s. Carver’s design credits included multiple generations of high-powered amplifiers, compact subwoofers capable of producing true low bass, and the impressive (but huge) Carver Amazing Loudspeaker—a hybrid floorstanding design that combined a ribbon-type tweeter/midrange module with traditional piston-type woofers.
At CEDIA Expo 2006, Sunfire is introducing the first new Carver-designed speaker to appear in many years, a compact yet very high performance speaker called the Cinema Ribbon Mini (or CRM). The tiny CRM is the result of extensive psychoacoustic research conducted by Carver, and features dual side-firing woofers, plus a single forward-firing ribbon driver with controlled dispersion. According to Sunfire, the CRM can actually “create a soundstage larger than many floorstanding products, delivering what Sunfire terms “floorstanding performance without the floor.
Carver intends to offer a matching center channel module, called the CRM-2C. The CRM and CRM-2C will sell for $800/each. The CRMs will begin shipping in November, 2006.
