Yamaha RX-V470 Switches Off Seconds after Power On - Ideas?

cgilker -- Wed, 01/17/2007 - 11:57

My Yamaha RX-V470 has begun switching off, for reasons I cannot explain, about 3 seconds after I turn it on.

This happens even with no other connections to the receiver (no speakers, no sources).

Any ideas? Is this an easy fix, or should I start looking for a new receiver?

cgilker-

It sounds like some of the protection circuitry is keeping things from singing? Am I right that it's a fairly old unit - circa '93 $499 if my Orion book is correct? It's probably going to cost a bit ($100-200+) to fix unless a bit of luck is on your side.

Maybe time to look at the new offerings from Outlaw, Onkyo, NAD, etc.? Multichannel is out of my area of expertise so others will be better at suggesting alternatives. (Our "home theater" is the tv/playstation run through an Exposure integrated with a pair of Sound Dynamics - woohoo!)

Good luck in your quest!
hth,
Scott

Normaly when this happens, we would find a short, normaly two speaker wires crossed up.

Thats unusual.

I had a old Kenwood that had a routine to reset all its origional factory settings, I think it was by holding a series of buttons on the front panel down at the same time. Im not sure if you would have enough time to execute a routine like this since its turning right off, but I would certainly humor that idea, see if its something you could try. I doubt it would be helpful for this situation, but Id at least humor it.
