I just ordered a Woo Audio Firefly DAC / Tube Amp. The stock unit good reviews but they offer upgraded Electro Harmonix tubes for an extra $100. I am new to tubes and am wondering if there will really be that much better if I spring for the upgrade. Anyone have experience with these kinds of tubes? Also, how long should the tubes last with regular use?
Also, if you guys have any suggestions for other types of tubes, please let me know ...
Mac Mini Sever -> Bel Canto DAC3.5 - > SimAudio i7 -> Dynaudio C1
The only way to know for sure if the "upgraded" tubes are better is to try both the stock and the new tubes and compare them.
If you hear an improvement with the newer tubes, then they may be worth the added expense, if not, then not.
As long as they are used within their proper operating range (biased correctly), there's no reason that tubes can't last for many years without degradation.
