At CES this past year, I met the technologists from Avega Systems, an Australian company that is developing wireless surround-sound speakers. That had a demo of front and rear surrounds set up at the show, and they were working on a subwoofer (that wasn't on display at the show).
We'll be running an interview with this technology innovators in an issue of The Perfect Vision (coming soon), so watch for that.
But in the meantime, have any of you encountered other wireless surround-sound speaker makers out there? Seems to me the market would be ripe now for ways to get rid of some of the massive speaker cabling that gets strung about the listening/viewing rooms, as long as the quality of video and audio were not adversely affected.
But this just may be a tall order.
What do you think? Will this be something we'll see more of in 2007 and beyond?

If someone can make some that work well, and by that I mean as well as what you could achieve with traditional wires, and work with existing HT receivers, they'll make a fortune.
We're preparing an interview with Avega co-founder Peter Celinski of Avega Systems for our October issue. They introduced their surround-sound wireless system at CES 2006 in January.
It'll be interesting to see how they've fared some 7 months later.
Imagine plopping down in your home theater easy chair after a hard day's work and beaming your iPod over to wireless speakers.
Or imagine showing your wife a set of great speakers in a showroom and overcoming her "but it's the cables" objection by saying, "cables? what cables?"
Yes, a forture, providing the technology is sound and the audio quality uncompromised.

Regarding Arnie's original post, I can think of several manufacturers who offer or are developing wireless speaker solutions.
Firebird Sounds offers a range of wireless, self-powered speaker stands and plinths, plus a line of wireless, self-powered speakers.

The German firm Canton also has a wireless, self-powered speaker called the CD 3500.
