Wilson Sophia 2 vs. Watt/Puppy 7

cat6man -- Fri, 02/19/2010 - 12:33

I may have an opportunity to upgrade my now long in the tooth B&W 801matrix2
for either a Sophia 2 or W/P7 for about the same amount of money.

Any comments/comparisons/suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a large living room but these have to shoot across the short dimension of the room,
set on either side of the fireplace. Multiple room openings make this a less than symmetric room.

The room opens up on left into a large family room and lower right into main entry hall.

I prefer the WP 7 - I believe they are more resolving and have more articulate (and deeper) bass.  They also have an easier time filling a large room.  The Sophia 2s are a lot easier to drive - so one of the key factors in your decision should revolve around the rest of your equipment.   If you already own an amp that can drive the WP7s with aplomb, I'd go that route.  The Sophias are very coherent, and set up properly, can sound great with relatively inexpensive amplification.  Hope that helps.  Btw - I've owned WP7s, Sophia 1s, Duettes and Maxx 2s.

The Sophia 2s are my favorite Wilson. Perhaps less drama then the W/P but  overall more coherent and refine.

thanks for the feedback.  i have vtl 225 monoblocks as amplification, driven directly by wadia 27ix.
i think i need to spend
some time listening to both speakers.  unfortunately, dealers won't have the 7's around anymore
to directly compare with the sophia 2's, which are current.  i've always found it hard to compare
speakers in different rooms with different sources and amplification.

with the b&w 801s, i use a tact rcs2.0s for room correction as i found it impossible otherwise to get satisfactory
imaging with the asymmetry of my  room layout.  the tact unit really helped bring the imaging
together for me.
