Have perused these forums and wonder why Ayre equipment is little mentioned by the TAS reviewers. The few times I see it mentioned, the reviewers don't seem to know anything about it. It seems to be the only major high end audio manufacturer not mentioned much here.
I own some of the gear and like it, I enjoy reading about other companies' gear, but I find the omission curious.
Equally curious is the Stereophiles "unequivocal success" stories of almost Every Ayre Product. Seems like both magazines are on opposite poles regarding this brand. One loves it as if there is no better thing in the world....the other ignores it. Im sure they are great sounding. Ive seen them at the shows and one thing is for sure...they are simple looking yet some of the best looking components in audio. "Audio Jewelery". I am curious too but I doubt we will ever find out why the two magazines share such opposite views.
Charles Hansen, Founder and head of Ayre, had a falling out with TAS editorial staff and pulled all his advertising from TAS some years ago. If you search Audio Asylum you will be able to find out the reason for the fall out/controversy.
Well....it has all to do with money. No ads = no reviews. Some months ago I asked through this forum why there were no reviews of Elrod power cords in ANY high-end magazine. I love those cables (elevated my system to new highs) and hoped that a review would make them better known to a wider public. I am not connected to the company in any way, just a satisfied customer. Not even got a response. Very disappointing...
No ads = no reviews? At least in the case of Ayre, I think there's a less cynical, and more accurate, analysis: disgruntled equipment manufacturer = no review samples. Both TAS and Stereophile go to considerable lengths to insulate editorial from advertising, and both review equipment that is not advertised in their publications.
You have to consider the fundamental problem that the number of equipment manufacturers - particularly speaker, cable, and accessory manufacturers - is simply overwhelming relative to the available reviewer capacity. Brands that attend all the shows, and manage to get good word of mouth from somebody influential, end up having a better chance to get reviewed. It's neither scientific, nor "fair", but most of life is that way ...
Yes but ayre gets over hyped in steriophile and completely ignored in TAS. Many other brands or majority of other work the way u describe. But not ayre. And I mean in terms of volume of brands for them to review.
Sam...as I mentioned in my post. Charlie Hansen has a beef with TAS and refuses whatsoever to provide any equipment for them to review. Advertising is out of the question as well. So it's not a matter that TAS is ignoring Ayre, it's that Ayre does not want to have anything to do with TAS. They cannot review something if the manufacturer is not willing to make a review sample available, or even if they decide to buy a unit on the market to review it (not likely), they will not get Ayre's cooperation in terms of explaining the technical aspects, etc...
Oh ok. I got it now. Well if it's ayre not providing samples to TAS. Then tough luck. And in that case no need for tas to go out of their way looking for ayre products. I tried to search audio asylum for reasoning. Didn't find much. If it's personal level of issues or dislikes then I could care less but if the fall out is for audio related things, business or views id like to know what the fall out is regarding.
