Which table is the better table between Vpi Classic and Nottingham Space 294?

ronarceneaux@bellsouth.net -- Thu, 08/12/2010 - 00:02

just need advice from those who own these two table and the editors who review these tables.

After listening you might want to check and see which company will give you better support - this may be based more on geography than anything else - but can you get parts directly from the maker or must you go through a distributor?

In the US VPI support is hard to beat.

I am currently using the Nottingham, and after getting accustom to the little quirk of having to propell the table by hand I am getting somewhat used to the table,    there are some issues I have, such as being carefull when removing a disc, depending on how the disc is removed, if slowing of the platter is done the plater tends to stop, necessitating a restart of the platter. I am also using the Wave Mechanic Outboard Power supply with the Table, I have been using the table for about 15 Months and outside of the quirks I mentioned so far I have no complaints.

thanks mr.steele for some insight on the nottingham.i really would like this table but their isn't a dealer anymore so i would question
how easy it would be for parts.how is the table when it comes to vibrations? reviewers are claiming no effects from vibrations with classic.
the base that the nottingham sits on,is it supportive of the table when it comes to vibrations? the base, whats its dimensions?22w 16d 2h ?
i'll be setting the table on a mapleshade shelf. all the shelves are solid 2 inch thich solid maple shelves.
mapleshaderecords, com if anyones interested in some beautiful, solid shelves.

My 294 sits on an 18" x 18" porcelin tile from Home depot with sorbothane buttons underneath and some foQ stuck in various places.  It sits between 2 Dunlavy SC IV speakers usually played at slightly louder than normal levels.  I have no problems with vibrations.  None.  The whole apparatus sits on a Solid Steel stand that has spikes stuck through thick carpet into concrete.  I would think that you would be very hapy with the Mapleshade shelf.  The 294 plays through a Nova Phenomena phono pre with a Dynavector 17D3 cartridge and I couldn't be happier.  This is a great 'table and arm.  No need for a add on power supply at all.  I stop the table to change records and to swipe the next record with a brush.  I've got the respin speed down pat.

thank you mr.jack d for your response.your setup sounds wonderful but i'm concerned now that their isn't a distributor.seen a few dealers on web but none in atlanta georgia. really like the novelty of spinning by hand to get table going.

I believe there is a distributor now in California.

I am surprised that not more distributors or brands have shut down or gone out of business given how difficult it is to hold up an audio company let alone in this terrible economy.  I have seen so many different businesses go out of business this last year alone including My local CD store where I used to buy CD's for the last 15 years finally shut down.  I was almost heart broken. lol. They said no one is buying CD's any more.  People are downloading songs or just getting stuff off the internet.  It's a shame how MP3's drove out a regular 44.1/16bit (better format than MP3).  I guess I'll look for another store for my audio needs.....unless iTunes or other online downloads would allow a full version of audio rather than compressed or poor quality stuff to be downloaded on line.  Times are changing.....20 years ago doesnt feel like that long ago.......but man time flies specially as i get old and wrinkled.

Sam:
have you purchased the "Classic?"

ronarceneaux@be... -- Thu, 08/19/2010 - 23:25

I also noticed the vpi classic comes with a 1 year warranty comparison to the space 294s 5 year warranty.
that points me in the direction of the space 294. longer warranty expresses confidence in your product.

If you're willing to fiddle and do the work yourself, there should be no problem not having a local distributor. Most companies will give you support / parts long distance when they have no local dealer - assuming they are still in business of course. You might want to check with Nottingham if they are willing to support you before buying the table.
In the past (early 80s), Linn gave me tremendous support including parts, setup manuals etc.. when I moved with my LP12 to a country where there was no dealer. They even asked one of their dealers (before the move) to teach me how to setup an LP12!

Goodwinshighend.com.  Goodwins Highend handles the Nottingham tables and so should be able to get parts.  However, my 294 is built like a Russian sledgehammer and I'd be astonished if it ever needed anything.
