Which dealer for new receiver?

Frisco the dog -- Tue, 01/13/2009 - 23:33

Hello this is my first post here I hope I've picked an appropriate forum.
I have moved to a new town and am trying to deciede where to buy myself a replacement for my Marantz sr8200 av receiver.
Where I live there is only 1 home theatre store they carry only Denon receivers not much selection, maybe one possibility. This is however the only dealer near my home for service and I usually prefer to shop locally.
I can drive 3 1/2 hours east to Calgary where I can find a good selection of dealers, here I'll likely find the best price. By shopping in Alberta I will also avoid paying the 7% pst I pay here in  British Columbia. Here I'll be able to at least do some in store listening sessions, but purchasing and returning would be an ordeal.(A few good mountain passes between here and there)
I am also considering dealing with the dealer in Winnipeg, Manitoba where I used to live. I have bought most of my components from them and definately trust them to give me the right advise. They also carry the speakers I use. I would not however be able to have any listening tests and would be going on recommendations and reviews.  Also paying for shipping (maybe)
I'm considering the hopefully upcomming Marantz sr8003 avr, or possibly upgrading to Marantz's Processor/Multi channel amp combo. (i'm unsure of model #'s) I believe the Winnipeg dealer would give me the right advise on that as well.
Any advise on this would be much appreciated.

While it's nice to buy locally, if the local dealer doesn't carry the brand you want, then a wider search is inevitable.

With electronics, most that are going to fail do it during the first several hours of use. I would also check to see if you can ship a faulty unit back to the dealer for exchange rather than having to deliver it in person.

I know the dealer in Winnipeg would definately let me ship it back if I had issues, I know 1 dealer in Calgary only allowed exchanges in 7 days and no outright returns which I didn't like at all, otherwise I havn't had much time to shop around their. I'm in construction and my f350 to cgy. and back is probably about the same cost as shipping from wpg, I think I'm leaning toward the guys I trust in winnipeg.

thanks for the reply.
