I guess Waylon was something of an anomaly in country music, kind of a rock sensibility. This year his son released a disc of his last songs called Waylon Forever. Is that a good place for a first sampling of Waylon?
I would suggest trying the "Best of..." series CD on Legacy. The Waylon Forever is revisionist view.
For my tastes WJ was just a traditional journeyman honkytonk rocker with a good image. Up-tempo Merle Haggard stuff floats my boat more.
