What is comparable to the Wavac Preamp?
On my list are Audio Note Kondo, Audion, Audio Note UK (m8), Dartzeel....
 
Would appreciate views.

 Call Jim@ tmhaudio.  He used to distribute WAVAC and knows the sonic signature.  I have heard this and it is amazing.  937-439-2667 in the US

The last one mentioned is not comparable. See the measurements taken by S'phile in their review.
