The specs of that Sharp DLP model at Costco look pretty good, though I don't really know how well it performs because I haven't tested it. Sharp is known for LCD flat panels, not RPTVs, so I'm a bit suspicious. On the other hand, it uses a recent-generation DLP chip with SmoothPicture (TI's name for wobulation). I've always thought these chips look pretty good, though the picture is a bit soft compared with DLP sets that use chips with 1280x720 actual mirrors. SmoothPicture chips have 1280x360 physical mirrors, and the image is quickly shifted back and forth by half a pixel width to form a complete picture. Some people claim to see artifacts from this process, but it hasn't bothered me so far.

To tell the truth, I was surprised to find a DLP for under $2000; in the price range you specify, I thought your only choice was going to be CRT. Now, there are plenty of people who say CRT is the best possible picture quality, and in some respects they are correct. But in my opinion, the improvement in picture quality is more than offest by the bulkiness of CRT-based RPTVs as well as the hassle of maintaining them, especially in terms of convergence. They also tend to exhibit low light output, which makes them difficult to watch in a room with ambient light. On the other hand, if you are sensitive to the so-called "rainbow" artifacts produced by DLP's color wheel, that technology is not for you.

Hitachi has a long reputation for making good CRT-based RPTVs, so the one you originally specified is probably good, though I have no experience with is specifically. And CRTs are the least expensive way to go today. In general, however, I prefer DLP for the convenience and reduced footprint as well as the typically good picture quality and high light output. If possible, go take a look at the Sharp at Costco; granted, that's not the ideal environment in which to judge the quality of a video picture, but it is a place to start.

Good advice by Scott. The Sharp DLP is a great value. I am going to try to get one for myself plus Costco has greatest return policy! Nothing can beat that...lol

Guess what?! The Sharp 56DR650 works great and I am still searching for the right HDMI cables.
