VPI for Multiple Tonearms

tmartin2 -- Sat, 01/21/2006 - 16:16

I heard that VPI has a solution for multiple tonearms on at least one of their 'tables, but I can't find anything on their site showing this. Does anyone know which VPI will do this?

I haven't seen an official multi-arm solution from VPI on their website either.

There would appear to be enough room to mount another arm on the TNT if you "hotrodded" it by drilling on the plinth (but not if you tried to use another armboard).

any experience with how VPI's "multiple arm wands" work?

The VPI multiple tonearms system simply works by switching out the actual tonearm and reconnecting the lead to the junction box, which takes less than ten seconds. If you look at the pricing page on the VPI website you'll find prices for additional tonearm wands which you mount another cartridge on. Like I said, the changeover takes less than a few seconds, assuming your VTA is the same. Very simple to do. No need to drill additional holes.

The VPI HW-19'S which was the first VPI turntable had an armboard which wss removable with 6 allen wrench screws.  By purchasing multiple armboards and mounting and adjusting each one, you could swap out multiple arms easily.  The best of those tables was the HW-19 Mk4 which had a 20 lb acryllic platter.
Probably not still sold by VPI, but you could always give Harry Weisfeld a jingle.  Very  nice guy and he may have some ideas.  Or you might find a used HW 19 on the market.  They do still sell the armboards, I think.
BTW, I still own this table, and I think it's very good especially if you put an isolation platform under it, and buy a stand alone motor mount.
