Vincent 331 & Quad 909 amps for Magneplaners

default -- Thu, 12/17/2009 - 21:19

Anyone heard or used the Vincent 331 or Quad 909 amps with Magneplaners? The Maggies usually like high current and I don't believe the Quad would be considered a high current amp.
Also considering these amps with a tube preamp - any known issues?
Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

I was using the Simaudio I 5 with 1.6s and switched to the SP 331 with Bluecircle 2.1 pre and the result was amazingly positive. I am now using the Vincent SV 236 MK integrated with equally great results. Just so much more detail and clarity. It also plays what it hears, letting the sloppy cds play like they are. I am using a subwoofer-Rel Storm III- for the bass, but the 1.6 alone supplies pretty good bass with the Vincent gear.

Thanks for the Vincent update. Sounds like a good combo. Anyone using the Quad with maggies?

The tubes in the Vincent are rated 10 to 12 thousand hours so unless you run your amp 24 x 7 the replacemrnt should be several years.

Hey dumbdog,
I am also considering the Vincent 331. I am sorry that I can not answer your question as I have no experience with the Maggies outside of the showroom. However, perhaps you could help me. How much of a factor should the tube life be when considering this amp. I have read that the amp must be sent in for tube replacement.

  1. I hope you guys don't mind my dumb questions,

Jers

Mollydog -- Fri, 12/18/2009 - 15:20

Not a dumb question. If the answer is yes, the amp must be sent in, its a very important factor determining the decision to buy, along with how the amp performs/its sonics. Right now I cannot answer the question about tube service, but I can get the answer in a little while--from the dealer from whom I bought the SV 236 MK . I will post as soon as I can.

I used a Vincent SP-331 with Magnepan 1.6 for a couple years now. It is a great combination - especially for the price.

OK, I have the answer to the question of sending the amp to the factory for tube change.  The answe is:  Anyone can change the tubes.  Just remove the cover and pull the old ones and put in the new ones.  If you have never done a tube change, its sort of like changing a light bulb, except you don't screw it in, you just push it in.  That how hard it is.  You just have to be sure the pins in the bottom of the tube are properly lined up with the holes in the socket.

It's my understanding the tubes are soldered in place, but I don't own the amp so can't say for sure.

Mollydog -- Fri, 12/18/2009 - 19:31

Hmmmm...............well the dealer I got my Vincent from tells me the tubes are replaced in the typical way. As in my post above. What is your source for the soldered in place information?

dumbdog (not verified) -- Wed, 12/23/2009 - 10:05

I read a review somewhere that stated the tubes were soldered and looking at the tubes on Audio Advisor leeds me to believe this is the case. Perhaps an owner could comment.

Anyone using the Quad 909 with Maggies?

Mollydog -- Mon, 11/29/2010 - 15:33

I cannot comment about the separates, Ronald, but I have been using the SV 236 MK 1 with Maggie 1.6s and now my new 1.7s, and I find the synergy just wonderful. I listen often to internet radio, especially Radio IO audiophile stream and Boy, is it nice!! Redbook and SACDs are also top notch.

RONALD -- Mon, 11/29/2010 - 17:12

how are the 1.7s compared to the 1.6 with the 236 trying to save money on a cd player but that could wait if the 1.7s are that much better what do you think new cd player or the 1.7s thanks for your help Ronald

Mollydog -- Mon, 11/29/2010 - 18:35

Well, I don't know what you have for a cd player now. If you have no cd player, or a real basic midfi cd player, then I would say get the cd player before upgrading to the 1.7s. If you have a highly satisfying highly reviewed, cd player, it makes more sense, IMHO, to upgrade to the 1.7s. They are very good, satisfying speakers. Of course, I would encourage you to audition the 1.7s, and if possible, compare them directly to the 1.6s in a room you know well.

RONALD -- Thu, 12/09/2010 - 08:42

what do concider a good cd player to be i am now using a old model harmon karden fl 8450 5 disk changer i am looking for somthing better any advise thought about cambridge 650 c or the jolida tube cd player please help thanks Ron

quadlover -- Mon, 11/29/2010 - 14:26

I have a friend who used a 909 with 1.6's with excellent results. I have never heard any Vincent equipment so I cannot comment on them.

Mollydog -- Sat, 12/11/2010 - 05:09

Well, I am not up on the latest models and their reviews.    I personally use an old Sony DVP NC 685V  5 disc changer retrofitted with a tube output circuit and it satisfies my needs very well.  Talk to your friends who have a budget similar to yours and see what they use/recommend.  Always ask them for a second choice and see if there is an agreement on a second choice and consider that machine.  And of course, listen to their equipment. Also, of course, look at recommended equipment lists published by TAS and that other mag.  Once you have a list of 2 or 3, go to dealers, take a familiar CD or 3 and do some listening.   Just my 2cw--Rich
