very confused about speakers

Hi everyone,
I've been a headphone enthusiast for years now, but only very recently turned my attention to the world of speakers. The only speakers I own are cheap ones which plug into the wall and terminate in a simple 3.5" jack....
What I want to know is, what kind of wiring do the maggies (and other high end speakers) employ? Are they active speakers that can just be plugged into a wall or do they need dedicated pre & power amps?
Also, are there any good speakers easily shipped/bought in Singapore under $1000 which do not require amping (if not, the whole system must be under $1000)
I know these are very basic questions but I can't seem to find any answers anywhere. The level of talk here is utterly out of my league :D
Thanks in advance!

There are active speakers out there, but Maggie's aren't one of them.  You'll need high-current amps to drive them.
