Using a US A/V Receiver in the UK

m14cus -- Thu, 03/29/2007 - 11:29

I live in the US and am thinking about buying a good A/V receiver my dilema is that I'm returning to the UK in 2 years time and do not want to invest heavily in some equipment that will be worthless when I return.

The unit is question was a Harman Kardon AVR 745, I was told by support that the PAL video signal from a source will pass through but not using HDMI. Also the On Screen Display will not work that is needed for setup.

Also the power supply would need switching and the Tuner resetting but these two items are easy.

So I have a couple of questions

- is is this support person correct and if so why wouldn't the PAL signal pass through the HDMI connections or is he trying to put me off buying it knowing that I may use it in a different contry?

- Why wouldn't the signal pass through the HDMI?

- This system upconverts the signals so would it be able to upconvert the PAL signal even though it was designed for NTSC?

- Would the NTSC setup screen display OK on a PAL TV? I thgouth it would becuase I have played NTSC games on my UK playstation and they worked fine.

I appreciate any links that you could direct me to and any advise you have to offer.

Thanks

Marcus
