turntable system, need help and suggestions!

Radiant -- Thu, 10/08/2009 - 16:11

So i recently undertook a quest to put together a somewhat high end system on a budget to play alot of my hand-me-down records and newer reissues. From what i understand i will need a turntable with a decent cartridge, a phono preamp and speakers.
I have an older belt drive turntable on the way from my dad with a Sure cartridge currently installed. I plan on replacing the stylus and taking it to get serviced.
what i need help with...
selecting a decent preamp (i was thinking with tubes/ usb out)
speakers? i have my eye on Magnepan MMGs or i found a 20 year old set of M2s for 475 (good deal/ worth it?)
and then a receiver for the speakers?
let me know if i missed something major
really appreciate suggestions and tips on how to get good bang for my buck and info on all the different hardware.
thanks
-Matt
