Talon ROC 2002

I have a pair of Magnepan 1.6's and I need a good sub to compliment the bottom end. I ran across a good deal on a Talon ROC 2002 and was wondering if anyone knows if this would be a good match for my speakers? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the ROC 2002 specifically, but you should know that the original Talon is no longer in business. The company was bought by Rives Audio about 18 months ago. Talon made some great-sounding speakers, although I have not heard the current production under Rives.

You need a sub with very little overhang to mate with the 1.6. Such a subwoofer is often erroneously called "fast," a term used to describe a tight and highly defined sound.

How much is the Talon?

The ROC 2002 was $3000.00 new and I just picked it up for 1100.00. It is claimed to be very fast and when I demo'd it I was impressed. It has a 1000 watt BASH amp with 3000 watt peaks for 10mS and 2 ea. 12" woofers opposing each other. The spec sheet rates it at 19-500 hz and 124dB continuous at 1m. It doesn't give any dB rating for the frequency response. It weighs 145 lbs. and the magnets on the woofers are nearly as big as the woofers themselves. The sensitivity is 94dB. It has 2 RCA inputs (left and right) and what look to be XLR inputs and outputs. I'm not familiar with XLR but that's what they look like from pictures I've seen. They have 3 pins arranged in a triangle. I am now wondering how I should connect it to my Onkyo TX-NR906 receiver.

It sounds like quite a subwoofer. If you're using it in a theater setting, you should drive it with the Onkyo's SUBWOOFER OUT jack going into one of the RCA inputs. Check the owner's manual to see how those two line-level inputs are configured.
