System synergy for high end players?

Is system synergy important when looking at the top half dozen contenders for best digital?   Or should all of the contenders sound amazing in a system driven by high end SS amp in the summer and a high end tube amp in the winter? 
I would hate to get 2 cd players depending on the system I will be using.
