Suggestion Box: Give Us Your Ideas for AVGuide

Tom Martin -- Sat, 05/24/2008 - 07:44

The editors would love to hear your ideas about internet features you'd like, user interface improvements you want, types of news to post, forum categories to add or subtract, technology to explain, trends to forecast, how-to info you want, new products to cover, different categories of products you'd like covered, or other suggestions.

So get those media mogul thoughts started and post your ideas here.

Thanks.

I think it would be a nice touch to have a gallery section for members to post pictures of their systems and listening rooms. Anyone care to comment on this?

Avsguide should not be adding people to distributions for its new car magazine without their permission.  Opt in is fine, but opt out is not cool.  Even worse, your opt out page does not go to a real unsubscribe page -- just some log-in page for members.  I have to go through ten steps just to opt out???  This is as uncool as making telemarketing calls during dinner time.  I have been a subscriber to AVS Guide for years, and Perfect Vision when it was around.

I mean The Absolute Sound, not AVS Guide.

The Unsubscribe process is two steps. The unsubscribe button in the email takes you to the user interface for subscribers for the appropriate publication. Then you hit the unsuscribe button that is there.  The two step process is to ensure that you don't get unsubscribed if you accidently hit the unsubscribe button in the email (a sort of "Are you sure?" feature).

I think the product guide/review section should allow the user the ability to select list based on different criteria.  In addition to the alphabetized manufactures list that you offer now I think that a list based on product type is needed.  I.E. a/v receivers, amps, loudspeakers, etc… Maybe a list based on the editors and reviewers favorites.  Maybe an option to sort list based on price range.  This would also lend itself to product exposure.  As inevitably, readers who are looking for a particular product type will read reviews of similar products even if they are not familiar with a manufacture.  If I recall correctly the old site allowed users to access reviews in this manor.  Your opinions matter to the readers, so that is why I suggest an option to sort list based on the reviewers favorites.  Would the reviewers and editors be inclined to provide us with updated lists of their own systems?

Thanks

Until those annoying boxing trolls disappear from the side of the site together with their offensive 'pow' sounds, I'll be keeping away from here!

How about doing an article on the history of hp's super disk list.
you could list all of the albums, cd's, and sacd's that have been listed over the years and also talk about deletions that have happened.

Regarding the Networked and Computer-Based Audio section of the Forum, i think this section is in need of some restructuring.  The first four topic sections: System Building, Music Servers, Computers for Audio Use and Software fro Computer Audio are to me a blend of related ideas and difficult to make distinct.  When i visit or contribute, i can never remember which if the four i make my comment to.  For instance i-tunes and its work with Squeezebox -- does it go to Software or Computers for Audio use or Music Servers?  I suggest two categories - Computers and Server Systems and Software for Audio Use. Considering how light the volume of contributions are given the enormous growth in the sector, this might be another indicator supporting the evolution of this section of the Forum.

How about a different reviewer comparing two or more pieces of equipment that has recieved rave reviews from other staff writers.  Not questioning the abiltiy of the writer, but creating a dialogue or a small summit (if you will) between the writers that your readers can get a better feel or that needed push in one direction or the other.
Thanks for the voice.

I'd like to see more pics of the homes (listening rooms) of reviewers - including HP.  We so seldom get to see the real-world environments in which your reviews are begun.  The pic of RH's listenging room was very illuminating - in a disturbing way.  TAS has, in the past, actually shown and diagramed HP's listening rooms.  But it's been quite some time since that was published and I'm sure you have many more new listeners since then.
