For Steven Stone re: Boulder Phil

Hi Steve. You mention a recent recording of the Boulder Phil performing Symphonie Fantastique in TAS. I would like to know which microphones were used and the setup of these in the hall. Did you use the mic preamps in the Korg MR1000? TIA

 Hello Curbfeeler,

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.

I use a pair of Schoeps Collette microphones in an M/S configuration. I have a drop point from the top of the hall and a tie-back line to adjust the position of the microphones. I've been recording in this hall for over seventeen years so I know it well enough to make adjustments for the solo instrument (over a foot lower for a violin soloist verses a piano) and size of the performing force.
Decoding to L/R is done in a Grace Lunatec 3 microphone preamplifier. From the Grace I feed whatever recorders I'm using. I've run the Korg MR-1000 at 5.6 DSD, the Tascam MR-1000 at 2.8 DSD, and the Marantz 670 at 96/24 PCM.

Steve, what do you know about the B&W site and the quality of the hi res files they have a subscritio service for?

Steven Stone -- Fri, 09/24/2010 - 17:12

I've never found anything on their site that grabbed me, but YMMV.

I'm not big on music subscriptions, I'm still upside down from the Columbia Record Club :).

They sent me a trial subscription a year back. The audio quality was good, but the music was not my cup of tea or coffee.
