Steel shot for speaker stands

I am planning on purchasing some Sanus steel foundation stands for my new speakers. I have heard that placing sand or shot in the stands helps to reduce vibrations and movement in the stands - making them more sturdy. Is this a legit fix? Are the sonic benefits worth the money? If so where would one go about purchasing steel shot?
