The HD DVD and Blu-ray specs call for an audio-only carrier. HD DVD can store eight channels of linear PCM digital audio with sampling rates up to 96kHz and word length of up to 24 bits. Blu-ray can store eight channels with sampling rates up to 192kHz and 24-bits. (HD DVD can store digital audio at 192kHz, but not in all channels simultaneously.) Blu-ray has a somewhat higher transfer rate, which enables the higher sampling frequency.
Although we have a high-res music carrier, it remains to be seen whether the music industry will release titles in these formats. The public has shown that they will accept highly compressed MP3 files. The music industry could be waiting to see what happens in the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray before making a move.
