Stacking pieces of gear on top of each other?

I have been playing with a lot of different gear lately and have run out of rack space.  How much of "good sound" am I losing if I stack some equipment on top of another, like the 2 parts of the VTL preamp (power supply and control units) on top of each other?  And will sound be diminished further if I throw a top notch cd player on top of the 2 VTL preamp pieces, etc.?   I do have real good power cords for all the stuff.  Thanks

Personally, I'm concerned about heat output with stacking, as this can shorten the life of components over time. I wouldn't stack, if I can avoid it. Otherwise, I have heard that inter-component vibrations can have subtle effects on the sound, so perhaps that'd be something to watch out for.

Buy some solid maple cutting boards at a kitchen store to seperate them at least imho.
