Speakers sounds bad

I just installed a Proficient C600TT In ceiling speaker. And it sounds bad. From the Receiver it hits a volume control then to the speaker. Everything is new. When I unhook one of the speaker wires in the volume control, the sound gets much better. Bad Volume Control?

When you unhook one of the speaker wires, does one of the speakers stop working but the other is still playing?

Its hard to tell. Its one of those left and right speaker in the same speakers. I'm guessing its the polarity but I've checked and double checked. I will triple check, i suppose
