Speaker Set-up

 Any tips on an efficient way to determine best speaker placement? Is there a best order in how to determine placement?  For example, does one first find the position from the back wall, then the space between speakers, then finallly toe-in?  What should one listen for in the various steps?  Is there a certain type of recording that works best in any phase?  I was at a dealer and he unhooked one speaker to determine placement. Anyone know what he was listening for?  I know about the equilateral triangle approach and would like to fine tune the sound from there.
