Speaker/ room interface

Due to moving, I relocated my system to a small (dedicated/treated) room measuring 10 x 14 with an 8ft ceiling. My current setup includes B&W 804S pushed by a VTL ST-150 and a Quicksilver preamp. I've measured a decent output (test tones)down to 25Hz- however, playing music does not reflect that: the last octave is MIA and the mid bass is not as full as I'd like.
Couple of questions: Do you suspect a poor match of amplifier/speaker-(impedance)? Can you make cabling suggestions for this system? Would a SS amp work better in this case? Finally, can you reccommend speaker/ wall distances for such a room? Any advice greatly welcome!

You can greatly change the bass balance (low-bass extension, mid-bass weight, for example) through loudspeaker and listening seat placement. I would try moving the speakers and listening position before changing gear.

The B&Ws will have deeper extension and more bottom-octave kick with a solid-state amplifier, although you might miss what tubes do in the midrange and treble.

For specific guidance on loudspeaker placement, see "Robert Harley's System Set-Up Secrets," a free download available at www.avguide.com/hifibooks

Let us know if moving the loudspeakers and listening seat helps.

Thank you very much Mr. Harley. I will experiment further. I currently have a quasi near-field (5ft. between speakers and listener) and there are about 3ft from the back wall and about 2ft from the side walls. I noticed in the pictures of the Wilson installation the X-2's were very close to room boundaries. Would such placement work for me?

Thanks very much Mr. Harley. I will experiment further. Currently, I am listening in the quasi near-field (5ft. between speakers and between the listener). This puts the speakers about 3 ft. from the back wall and 2 from the side walls. The listening position is about 3ft. from the wall behind it (rule of thirds from your book). I noticed in the pics from your Wilson install the X-2's are very close to room boundaries- should I try a similar position?

In another issue- do you think the new Brystons would make me miss tubes in the treble and midrange?
Thanks again.
