Speaker placement question

mcduman -- Mon, 02/23/2009 - 07:59

i am moving to new dedicated listening room that will be strictly two-channel. i have done quite a bit of reading on room acoustics etc but one problem i have and the reason I am writing is that the size of the room at 4.20*4.70m (or 13.80 x 15.40’) is square-ish, a less than ideal shape acoustics-wise. Otherwise, I have no constraints on placement and can apply all sorts of treatments. Now,

Should I place the speakers (yg anat monitors) on the short or long end of the room?

If I were to cover one of the short walls completely with a, say 40 cm deep bookshelf full of books and cds, does the room now act as a 3.80x4.70m room? If that is the case, the sonics should improve vastly, at least in theory.

I am open to all suggestions and ideas.

As a general rule, I would place the speakers on the short side, but since this is a very small room, you'll need to experiment or have some acoustic modeling done. What you are trying to attain is minimum room modal and boundary interfearence by optimum speaker/listener locations, while also achieving optimum soundstage.
Regarding the bookshelf changing your room dimensions, probably not. You are asking wheather or not the bookshelf will reflect low frequencies and I would say that the bookshelf filler will absorb some low frequencies, but not reflect them because the mass is not stiff enough. You may  benefit from the diffusion introduced by placing books and cds staggered horizontaly symmetrical on the front or rear wall.
