Spam on the boards

There's been a pretty big increase in spam messages recently, which are eventually getting cleaned up. However, it is still pretty annoying.
Would it be counterproductive to have registration mandatory to post? I believe many sites are having the registrant type some letters to verify that this is a person and not a machine,.

i agree , its such a pain to read these annoying spam posts

It seems that some of these sites were UK based sites and have been closed down by the London Metropolitan Police. Hurrah!
